Promoting healthy lifestyles in school

Sunday 4th November marked the start of Kuwait English School’s annual Healthy Lifestyle Week. A whole-school initiative, the objective was to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating and exercise to students. Pupils from all parts of the school, ranging from Kindergarten to Year 13,  were engaged in a myriad of activities promoting healthy and active lifestyles. Amongst the events that took place across the whole school were:

  • morning aerobics classes – scientifically proven to improve academic progress
  • bleep tests to assess the students’ aerobic capacity
  • Science experiments, showing the harmful effects of fizzy drinks
  • inspirational talks by Kuwaiti triathlete Abdulaziz Al Rashed and professional jet skier Mohammad Burbaye
  • healthy cooking masterclasses by guest chefs Marco Vigonovo and Sami
  • Year 5&6 trip to Trampo
  • poem-writing, rap-singing and painting
  • Ultimate Fitness Challenges, designed to push students to their physical limits
  • and many more.

It was evident that both the students and staff thoroughly enjoyed getting involved.

Mr Christopher Horrocks, Director of Sport at KES, was delighted with the week’s events. “It has been another successful and fully action-packed Healthy Lifestyle Week.  The students have really enjoyed the different activities that have been put on in lessons and the extra events before, during and after school.  Thanks to all the staff who have helped out over the week.  The highlight for me was the early morning exercise sessions in which over 2,500 young people started their day with high intensity exercise and a smile on their faces!”

A huge congratulations must go out to all of the staff and students at KES who took part in the events and of course to Lynne, Nicola, Jack, Nathan, Juliette and Priya from the Al Corniche Club for the wonderful early morning aerobics and combat style exercise sessions. Congratulations go to Miss Monica Lui and Mr Apostolos Papadopoulos for leading initiatives in the Junior School and Green Unit respectively. A big thank you also to elite sports personalities Abdulaziz Al Rashed and Mohammad Burbaye and professional chefs Marco Vigonovo and Sami for their time and inspiring the students of KES.

The Healthy Lifestyles Week was certainly filled with fun and excitement while helping to promote the benefits of staying active.
