Course Description

The curriculum to be covered at IGCSE Chemistry includes the following: Atomic Structure, Bonding and the Structure of Matter, Stoichiometry, Electricity and Chemistry, Chemical Energetics, Rates of Reaction, Reversible Reactions, Redox, Analysis of Gases and ions, Metals, Organic Chemistry, Quantitative Chemistry, Sulphur, Air & Water, Carbonates.

Assessment

All candidates will follow the extended curriculum at IGCSE and will be eligible for the award of Grades A*-G. This means that they will be entered for examination papers 2, 4 and 6. However, if after two years of study, we believe the student is capable of only a Grade C, then they will be entered for Papers 1, 3 & 6 only. The papers are as follows:

  • Paper 1: (45 minutes) (30%) Core Curriculum: Multiple Choice Paper. 40 Questions.
  • Paper 2: (45 minutes) (30%) Extended Curriculum: Multiple Choice Paper. 40 Questions.
  • Paper 3: (1 hour 15 mins) (50%) Core Curriculum: Compulsory short answer and structured questions, designed to discriminate between Grades C-G.
  • Paper 4: (1 hour 15 mins) (50%) Extended Curriculum: Compulsory structured and free response questions designed to discriminate between Grades A* to B.  This paper will mainly target the Higher Grade questions.
  • Paper 6 : (1 hour) (20%) Alternative to Practical: This is a written paper with compulsory questions designed to test familiarity with practical laboratory procedures. Candidates will not require knowledge outside the Core Curriculum.

If a student is entered for the Extended Papers, these will allow for an award of A*-G grade. If the core papers are taken then only C-G Grades may be awarded.

The Future

An IGCSE Chemistry qualification is essential for courses in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, chemical engineering, environmental science, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, forensic science, food technology, petrochemical and oil industry.
